Match report
Nacional drew 2-2 with Juventud in the Clausura fifth round of the Uruguayan Primera División at Estadio Gran Parque Central on Saturday evening. The result leaves Nacional sixth with 26 points and drops Juventud to eleventh on 30 points after 26 matches each. We had backed the hosts for victory at 53 per cent confidence, but the match refused to follow that script.
Larregui put the visitors ahead in the third minute, and Rodriguez levelled by the ninth. To be fair, the away side pressed higher from the start and their early pressure told. Nacional brought on Coates and De Los Santos at the break, a move that shifted their midfield balance. By then the visitors had already shown they were comfortable carrying the ball into the final third.
Calvo restored the home lead in the sixty-seventh minute after Silva's introduction had stirred the attack. And here's the thing — Juventud responded with three changes at the seventy-sixth minute, trying to find a way through a compact shape. The away side's substitutions were reactive rather than proactive, which is often how you know a team is chasing the game.
Possession statistics tell part of the story: Juventud held 57 per cent and registered 107 attacks against 95, yet the home side's defensive discipline meant the extra territory didn't translate into chances. Yellow cards accumulated on the away side — five in total — while the home team kept their discipline. The late Alaniz goal in stoppage time rescued a point that might otherwise have been lost.
The draw extends Nacional's unbeaten run to five matches and halts Juventud's momentum after a 3-0 defeat to Central Español three days earlier. Both sides remain mid-table, with the gap between them now just four points. What mattered tonight was not who controlled the ball, but who held their nerve.
