Utah Royals saw off Portland Thorns 5:1 in the NWSL Group Stage on Saturday evening. The hosts took control from the opening minutes and never looked back, with S. Wilson firing in after just one minute. C. Delzer added two more goals before half-time, while B. Mozingo and K. Palacios rounded off the scoring in the second half. K. Del Fava finished with a late strike of his own.
And here's the thing about that first goal — it set the tone immediately. Portland had to chase the game from the start, and by then they were already playing catch-up. Delzer's brace before the interval meant the visitors needed something special to get back into it, but they found no answer. Mozingo's goal in the 68th minute might have ended any remaining hopes.
The statistics tell you what happened, if you bother to look. Utah held 57 per cent possession and created six big chances compared to Portland's two. They registered 11 shots with seven on target, while the visitors managed eight attempts and five on target. Attacks came 170 to 140 in favour of the hosts, and they completed 333 successful passes against 234 for Portland.
To be fair, Portland had their moments. They completed 46 long passes and made 16 dribbles, trying to find a way through a well-organised defence. But they were always reacting, always chasing. The goalkeeper made two saves and saw three shots blocked, while Utah's keeper faced four saves and two blocked attempts. Things came to a head when Mozingo's goal pushed the margin beyond recovery.
By then the result was clear enough. Utah moved to 39 points from 23 games, sitting fourth in the table with 12 wins, three draws and eight defeats. Portland remain sixth on 38 points from the same number of matches — 11 victories, five draws and seven losses. The gap between them is one point now, and this result could matter more than the numbers suggest.
