Greuther Fürth and Magdeburg played out a 1:1 draw in the 2. Bundesliga's sixth round at Sportpark Ronhof Thomas Sommer on Friday evening. Emmanuel Iyoha opened the scoring for the hosts before Omar Sillah equalised after VAR confirmation. The result leaves Fürth in 11th place with five points from five games, while Magdeburg move into fourth on nine points.
Iyoha's strike came early, in the fifth minute, catching the visitors off guard. Magdeburg's defence had barely moved from its shape when the ball found the Nigerian forward in space inside the penalty area. He finished calmly, and Fürth took an unexpected lead.
By then Magdeburg had found their rhythm, and Sillah levelled matters in the 20th minute. The goal was initially disallowed, but the decision was overturned after VAR reviewed the play. Sillah had been dragged out of position earlier in the half, but he recovered his composure to slot home.
The match grew scrappy after the breaks, with four yellow cards on display. Jannis Heuer, Luka Hyryläinen, Paul Will and Dennis Srbeny all received booking for various infractions. The referee had little to do otherwise, as both sides settled into a cautious pattern.
Magdeburg dominated possession with 56 per cent and launched 140 attacks compared to Fürth's 81, yet they managed only six shots on target. Fürth were second to everything in midfield but got their substitutions spot on, bringing on Hendry Blank and Herbert Bockhorn late on. The expected goals figures tell a similar story: 0.9 for Magdeburg against 0.7 for the hosts.
Magdeburg's run of four wins in five matches came to an end here, though they remain well placed. Fürth's inconsistency continues, with this draw following losses to Heidenheim and Wolfsburg. The gap between them in the table remains eight points, and the line has barely moved for either side this season.
