Portland Thorns and Chicago Red Stars shared the spoils in a Group Stage fixture of the NWSL at Providence Park on Saturday evening. The sides played out a 1-1 draw under lights in Portland, with the result leaving the hosts sixth and the visitors still rooted to the bottom of the table. We had backed Portland to win with 75 per cent confidence, but the match refused to follow that script and instead went its own way.
The opening chapter of the match turned on a single moment. Maitane López netted an own goal in the twenty-second minute, sending the ball into her own net and giving Portland the lead. By then the visitors were already rattled, and López picked up a yellow card two minutes later for a challenge that looked more nervous than cynical. Chicago's first half ended with them chasing the game and trying to find their shape.
The second half brought a flurry of changes as both managers searched for something different. Portland introduced Morgan Weaver in the forty-fifth minute, then Michelle Alozie after the hour. Chicago responded with a double substitution in the seventy-third, bringing on Brianna Pinto and Jenna Bike. More came at the eighty-minute mark when Reyna René Reyes Stubblefield and Reilyn Turner joined the action, and Portland added Mary Alice Vignola in the ninetieth. Taylor Wood then struck in the ninety-second minute to rescue a point for Chicago.
The statistics tell a story of control without conversion. Portland held 56 per cent possession and registered 123 attacks, yet created zero big chances and hit the target with only six of their nineteen shots inside the penalty area. Chicago were more efficient, converting 44 per cent of their shots on target, while their goalkeeper made seven saves to keep out the pressure. The hosts completed 406 passes against 300 for their visitors, but the extra volume did not translate into a win.
The result extends Portland's unbeaten run to four matches, though it does little to shift their position in the standings. Chicago remain sixteen points adrift of a playoff place, having not won since August. The visitors have now dropped points in consecutive games after that heavy defeat to North Carolina, and the gap at the bottom shows no sign of closing. Portland will need to find a way to turn dominance into goals if they are to climb further.
