Budapest Honved

In the summer of 2026 the club will play under a name it has not carried since 1949: Kispest Honvéd, restored after a fan vote. In between came the years that mattered most, 1950 to 1991, when the Hungarian army absorbed the club — Ferenc Puskás among them, captain and top scorer of a side that won five championships with him on the pitch and had his number 10 retired. Sándor Kocsis and Zoltán Czibor wore the same shirt in the same years, part of the Mighty Magyars core that made Kispest, for a decade, the most feared name in Hungarian football regardless of what the league table above it said.

The championships kept coming after the army years ended: 14 Nemzeti Bajnokság I titles in all, the last in 2016–17, alongside eight Magyar Kupa wins stretching from 1925–26 to 2019–20. The 1959 Mitropa Cup remains the club's one continental trophy. None of it carries the weight of the Puskás years, but the record has kept Honvéd inside the conversation with Ferencváros, MTK, Újpest and Vásás whenever the Budapest derby is drawn up.

The club plays at the Bozsik Aréna, a ground of some 8,200 seats named for József Bozsik, the wing-half who anchored the same Mighty Magyars midfield and stayed with the club for the whole of his playing career. It sits in Kispest, on the southern edge of Budapest, the same district the club never really left even as its name changed six times around it.
