Universidad Católica saw off Orengo 2-1 at the Olímpico Atahualpa in the Liga Pro Regular Season on Tuesday evening. The hosts moved up to second place in the table, while the visitors dropped further down to thirteenth. It was the kind of match where the result felt earned rather than given.
José Fajardo opened the scoring after just three minutes, a quick burst that caught the visitors off guard. Then came the double at the five-minute mark — Mauricio Sebastian Alonso Pereda struck twice, the second effort confirmed by VAR after an initial call. By then the visitors were already on the back foot, scrambling to find their shape.
Valentín Burgoa pulled one back for Orengo at fourteen, and suddenly the game had a pulse again. The visitors pushed forward, but the hosts' defence held firm. Sixto Mina picked up a yellow card at twenty-six minutes, and Burgoa followed suit at forty-three as tensions rose.
We had called for a home win beforehand, 64 per cent confidence. And here's the thing — the match played out along those lines. The hosts controlled territory, moved the ball into the final third with purpose, and wore the visitors down. Orengo's goalkeeper made three saves, but the shots he faced were few and far between.
The statistics told the story, though not always in the way you'd expect. Universidad Católica had 71 per cent possession, 157 attacks to 69, and fourteen shots on target compared to Orengo's one. They created two big chances; the visitors managed none. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging — or rather, came and went for the away side.
Substitutions came thick and fast in the second half. Jimmy Evans went off at the end of the first half, then a wave of changes at eighty-four minutes as both sides tried to hold on or find an equaliser. Daniel Clavijo was the last to come on, at ninety-plus-five, when the game was already settled.
The result leaves Universidad Católica on fifty-one points, three behind the leaders. Orengo sit on thirty-three, fifteen points adrift of safety. It was a match decided in three or four moments, the rest just noise. To be fair, the hosts knew how to finish one off.
