Aargesh Piteşti and Botoşani played out a 1-1 draw in the ninth round of the Ligi I at Stadionul Mieveny. We had tipped the hosts for victory but the match went another way, and by then it was clear the red card had altered everything. Taylor Luvambo opened the scoring for Aargesh before Gabriel Gama rescued a point for the visitors.
Aargesh controlled the shape of the game for large stretches. They made 80 attacks against 128 for the visitors but created only one big chance while Botoşani produced three. To be fair, the visitors were more clinical with their finishing, even if Aargesh had the higher volume of possession at 34 per cent.
The turning point came when Narcis Ilas received a second yellow card in the 68th minute. He had been booked earlier in the half and the dismissal left the hosts to finish with ten men. It felt like the moment the match shifted, because Aargesh had been comfortable until then and suddenly had to defend deeper.
Substitutions piled up toward the end, with Aargesh bringing on Roland Idowu, Andrei Dumiter, Hervin Ongenda, and Zoran Mitrov in quick succession. Botoşani responded with Dorinel Oancea and Yanis Pirvu. The changes did not produce a winner, though, and the game settled into a cautious pattern.
Statistically the match told a familiar story: many passes, few chances. Aargesh completed 202 of 294 passes and had six shots on target from seven attempts inside the box. Botoşani completed 481 passes and registered three shots on target from five attempts. The difference was in conversion, not creation.
Both sides remain on 11 points after nine games. Aargesh sit tenth with three wins, two draws and four losses. Botoşani are ninth with two wins, five draws and two defeats. The result neither team can claim it has turned a corner, and neither side has much to celebrate.
